As the most affordable city in Metro Vancouver, Surrey attracts families with kids more than any other. But there are other reasons people choose to raise their children here: Surrey residents believe in making space for kids and understand that challenges of parenting. But parenting can also be a bigger struggle in Surrey than elsewhere.
In much of the city, our transit system and bike paths are not up to the challenges of getting our young people safely to and from the places they need and want to be. We often lack spaces and activities for our older kids in the evening if they don’t feel like being at home. And many amateur sports are only accessible to children with parents who can afford sports equipment and have time to drive them to and from practices and games.
Proudly Surrey will defend and enhance our city’s commitment to kids and make sure that this becomes a place where parenting is supported and kids are safe and welcome.
We will establish a program to ensure that any child wishing to join an amateur sports team can get to practice and games without needing a ride from their parent through a system of Compass vouchers, off-hour use of the Surrey School Board bus fleet and any additional vehicles that the City must purchase to ensure every kid can get to their game
We will establish a sports equipment bank that will receive donated sports equipment that is redistributed to kids struggling to afford sports equipment and purchase additional equipment to ensure every kid can get to their game
We will abolish all user fees for school activities, supplies and equipment and raise property taxes to cover these costs because these things are part of any true free, universal education system
